SENATE PASSES COCHRAN SPONSORED RACIAL AMITY RESOLUTION
Measure Designates Sunday as a National Day of Racial Amity and Reconciliation
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The U.S. Senate today approved a bipartisan resolution sponsored by U.S. Senators Thad Cochran (R-Miss.) and Edward Markey (D-Mass.) to designate Sunday, June 12, as a National Day of Racial Amity and Reconciliation.
The resolution (S.Res.491) focuses on the motto on the national seal, “E Pluribus Unum” or “Out of Many, One.”
“Good will among the American people strengthens our communities and country. This resolution encourages us to remember that we should work together to meet the challenges facing our nation,” Cochran said.
The resolution encourages Americans to join in activities that support the goals and ideals of racial amity and consensus.
The measure notes that “organizations and communities across the United States, motivated by the ideals behind the motto of E Pluribus Unum, have joined together in introspection and reflection on how the diversity of the people of the United States has been indispensable in creating the United States.”
The resolution was cosponsored by U.S. Senators Roger Wicker (R-Miss.), Richard Burr (R-N.C.), Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) and Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio).
Congress adopted E Pluribus Unum as the motto for the Seal of the United States in 1782.
