Mississippi Supreme Court Justice Dawn Beam Files Qualifying Papers for 2016 Campaign
Today, Mississippi Supreme Court Justice Dawn Beam announced that she has filed qualifying papers for the election to be held November 8, 2016. Justice Beam was recently appointed to the Supreme Court by Governor Phil Bryant to fill the unexpired term of Justice Randy “Bubba” Pierce following his resignation. She was sworn-in as a member of the Supreme Court on February 15.
“I’m pleased to file my qualifying papers for the November election and I’ll be working as hard as I can to continue earning the trust and support of the people I serve,” Justice Beam said. “I’m honored to have been appointed by Governor Bryant to fill the vacancy on the Court, and I’m committed to ensuring fairness for everyone who comes before the Court. Between now and the November election, I look forward to listening and addressing the concerns people have, and delivering a positive message about my background, principles and values.”
When appointing Justice Beam to the Supreme Court, Governor Phil Bryant stated, “Her experience as a Chancery Judge, prosecutor, and a private practice attorney will be valuable in this role. Her work earlier in her career at the Mississippi Department of Human Services dealing with federal compliance and protecting the children of Mississippi will be beneficial to the Court, and I know she will serve the citizens of Mississippi well.”
Justice Beam serves as a member of the Supreme Court from a district encompassing the southern portion of the state (District 2) which includes Adams, Amite, Clarke, Covington, Forrest, Franklin, George, Greene, Hancock, Harrison, Jackson, Jasper, Jefferson Davis, Jones, Lamar, Lawrence, Lincoln, Marion, Pearl River, Perry, Pike, Simpson, Smith, Stone, Walthall, Wayne and Wilkinson counties.
Prior to being appointed to the Supreme Court, Justice Beam served as 10th District Chancery Judge in Forrest, Lamar, Marion, Pearl River and Perry Counties. She led the effort to address abuse and neglect in Marion County to protect children, and previously served as Lamar County Prosecuting Attorney, Youth Court Prosecutor, Criminal Prosecutor in Justice and County Court. She has practiced law for more than 20 years representing people, businesses and various entities throughout South Mississippi. She has a Law Degree and Bachelor of Arts degree in Business from the University of Mississippi.
Justice Beam is married to Dr. Stephen Beam and they have five children. She served as a Foundation Board Member of the University of Southern Mississippi, a Member of Sumrall United Methodist Church, Founding Member of the Sumrall Development Foundation, Co-Founder of Pine Belt 360, Member of the Salvation Army Advisory Board and the Sumrall Lion’s Club.
