CL gives an “Oh Boy!” to Sen. Kirby’s bill to move DPS to Rankin County

By: Magnolia Tribune - February 3, 2016

Attaboy’s and Oh Boy’s for Feb. 3

Oh Boy!

To the bill pending in the Mississippi Legislature that would relocate the Department of Public Safety to Rankin County. First, the proposal from state Sen. Dean Kirby, R-Pearl, would require a bond issue at a time when the state is struggling to make ends meet during a projected budget shortfall. Secondly, a call to move yet another state agency out of the capital city serves only a few with local interest and not all the citizens of the state. Centralization of Mississippi agencies is a convenience to the taxpayers requiring services, those with agency oversight, i.e. the Legislature — housed in the center of Jackson — and a key part in revitalizing downtowns (see Baton Rouge, Montgomery). We make no argument against an improved, safer facility. But we take issue with another attempt to outsource state agencies to other counties.
