Sid Salter: Facts should erode Trump-fanned fear
This debate goes far beyond partisan politics. Congress and the White House, regardless which major party controlled either institution, have kicked the can down the political road for decades on national immigration policy. Immigration was a public policy quagmire in America long before terrorists struck fear on U.S. soil.
But Trump’s call to bar Muslims from entering the U.S. does absolutely nothing to “secure America’s border” as U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz later suggested. A ban on Muslims leaves the nation’s borders as porous as they are today.
House Speaker Paul Ryan was right when he said, “This is not conservatism. What was proposed yesterday (by Trump) is not what this (Republican) party stands for and, more importantly, it’s not what this country stands for.”
