Medicaid stance not expected to change
Gov. Phil Bryant, Lt. Gov. Tate Reeves, who presides over the Senate, and House Speaker Philip Gunn, all Republicans, have been adamant in their opposition to the expansion, that would provide health care to people earning up to 138 percent of the federal poverty level or $16,105 annually for an individual or $32,913 for a family of four.
It is doubtful this year’s statewide elections will change the debate on Medicaid expansion in Mississippi. All three are expected to be in their same position for the next four-year terms, though, some observers give Democrats an outside chance of gaining a majority in the House and ousting Gunn as speaker. Most legislative Democrats have expressed support for Medicaid expansion. Still, Reeves and Bryant are expected to win re-election handily.
