Besides Common Core, 7 other education issues to watch in Mississippi’s 2014 legislative session

Besides attempts to reject or curtail Common Core academic standards, Mississippi lawmakers are likely to debate a number of other K-12 education issues in 2014. Among them:

— Funding and pay raises: The full cost of the state’s funding formula for the 2015 budget year is $2.35 billion, while lawmakers have recommended spending $2.13 billion. There’s likely to be a push for more money. Teachers’ groups and some top lawmakers are also pushing to increase pay scales.

— Funding formula: After a law was passed in 2013 requiring students to attend school for more than 60 percent of the day to be counted as present for state funding purposes, there could be additional attempts to alter how the Mississippi Adequate Education Program funding formula is calculated.
