Battle over Mississippi charter schools heating up as legislative session nears
With Mississippi’s 2013 legislative session set to open Tuesday and charter schools sure to be a hot topic, the rhetoric over the issue is heating up.
The Parents’ Campaign, a grass roots group of public education advocates in the state, is pushing back hard against the efforts of state leadership to make charter schools a part of the education landscape in Mississippi. Gov. Phil Bryant and Lt. Gov. Tate Reeves have led the push for legislation allowing charter schools in the state, calling them an option worth trying in areas where public schools are failing.
But Nancy Loomis, executive director of the Parents’ Campaign, calls the charter school push “an effort to push through a for-profit agenda rather than enact what has been proven to advance student achievement.”
