Bryant won’t be at port meeting in Gulfport
A scheduling conflict will prevent Gov. Phil Bryant from attending a community meeting port officials expect to host Nov. 15 about port restoration and expansion, spokesman Mick Bullock said Thursday.
At Bryant’s insistence, the port is re-evaluating its plan to elevate the West Pier to 25 feet for storm-surge protection. Bryant has said the port could save time and money by completing an 84-acre West Pier expansion without elevation.
Bryant wants to see the port project begin generating jobs, a requirement the port agreed to meet in exchange for $570 million from a federal Community Development Block Grant.
The Sun Herald asked Bullock by email if the governor and the Mississippi Development Authority, which administers the CDBG money, would be involved in the elevation decision and when it might be reached.
