Mississippi’s 2nd District Congressman Bennie Thompson, the state’s lone Democratic U.S. representative, says government needs to be more responsive to people of all races and backgrounds.
Such a statement from Thompson isn’t unusual, and not because he is black, but because he is admittedly a big government liberal through and through.
Government should be more responsive, eh? Look in the mirror, Bennie.
Thompson and his office should practice what he preaches. Counties and cities/towns across Mississippi make an annual trek to D.C. to meet with the state’s federal delegation on matters facing their constituencies and more often than not the Democrat’s office will not schedule meetings with local elected officials from around the state. Every other member, whether if they have had a D or R behind their name, has accommodated visiting officials.
You would think Thompson, having been in local elected office before he became a congressional millionaire, would be more responsive to local leaders. But hey, memories are short.
To make it more interesting, Thompson made the comments at an Obama White House sponsored event at Jackson State University centered around how blacks are affected by government. According to the AP article, “It’s one of three such meetings the Obama administration is sponsoring to discuss how issues such as nutrition, poverty and job creation affect black people.” It’s interesting that they would choose Jackson (MS), Cleveland (OH), and Las Vegas (NV) to hold these meetings.
Election year overtones abound.
A portion of the meeting was aimed at promoting Obamacare with Thompson stating, “I’m going to continue to be that tax-and-spend liberal that supports affordable care for everybody.”
President Obama also addressed the gathering via video saying, “We can either settle for an economy where a shrinking number of people do really well while a growing number of people barely get by, or we can build an economy where everyone gets their shot, everyone does their fair share and everyone plays by the same set of rules.”
Such is the path of liberalism progressing to socialism; degrade capitalism and competition while providing more handouts so people are reliant on government and thus will support their progressive ideals.
Voters in Mississippi’s 2nd District seem to like the path to poverty that Thompson and Obama provide. Thankfully, a majority of Mississippians disagree and continue to prove it in state elections.
