Girls State is peek at politics

Sam Gibson is unsure about a future in politics.

But that doesn’t mean the Petal teen won’t be fully committed in her role as governor of the mythical state of Magnolia.

“I plan to be fully committed to the will of the people. I want to see expansions in education,” she said. “I want to use my power to better people.”

Gibson is one of more than 230 young women taking part this week in the American Legion Auxiliary’s annual Girls State. The program started Sunday at the University of Southern Mississippi and wraps up Saturday.
