South Mississippi’s Own Named Nation’s Poet Laureate
Congressman Steven Palazzo (R-MS), today congratulated Mississippi Poet Laureate, Natasha Trethewey, on being named the 19th U.S. Poet Laureate. Trethewey hails from Gulfport, Mississippi, in the fourth congressional district.
“South Mississippi could not be more proud to claim Ms. Trethewey as one of our own,” Palazzo stated. “I was honored to be able to call and congratulate her today and tell her how proud we are to have her represent us in this role. I also look forward to welcoming her to our nation’s capital in a few weeks.”
Trethewey’s accomplishments include the Pulitzer Prize in poetry for her 2006 work, Native Guard, and being named Mississippi’s state poet laureate in January 2012. Trethewey will be the 19th Poet Laureate to serve since the position was created in 1986, and only the second to hail from the South.
