Unions find little luck in the South
United Auto Workers has been trying to find a way to break into Southern car plants for the last few years, calling the market key to the future of the industry’s labor movement.
The Nissan plant in Canton is the most recent target, though workers say they’ve approached the union, rather than vice-versa.
“The employees called for the union,” said eight-year employee Rosalind Essex. “We need a third party. We need the union.”
At a news conference Sunday, NAACP leaders and 2nd District U.S. Rep. Bennie Thompson voiced their support for Nissan workers if they decide to unionize.
