Legislature a step closer to 1-cent tax
State lawmakers Monday agreed on a bill that would let voters in Jackson and some outlying communities decide on a special 1-cent sales tax increase for much-needed water and sewer repairs.
But it appears the debate is far from over.
Both the House and Senate adopted conference reports on House Bill 168, which would let Jackson and communities on the city’s water system have a vote on the tax increase. However, the measure is being held on a motion to reconsider in both chambers and could be taken up again today.
