Mississippi lawmakers give school funding a boost
State legislators slightly raised education spending but added no money for high-growth school districts Saturday as they slogged through a $5.55 billion state budget for the fiscal year that begins July 1.
House and Senate members dealt with most of the more than 100 individual appropriations bills that, once approved, comprise the state’s spending plan for the new fiscal year.
Legislators adjourned for the day without resolving four major areas of state spending: the Department of Public Safety, Division of Medicaid, the Mississippi Development Authority, and the amount of the state’s bond package for the coming year.
The House and Senate are more than $200 million apart — the House wants to spend more than does the Senate — on the amount of bonds the state should issue to cover largely capital expenses
