Palazzo runs in honor of student with leukemia
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Steven Palazzo (R-MS), Mississippi’s Fourth Congressional District Representative, will participate in the annual Credit Union Cherry Blossom Ten Mile Run on Sunday, April 1, in honor of one of South Mississippi’s own, Gulfport High student Nick Myers.
Myers, a sophomore soccer player recently diagnosed with leukemia, has been receiving treatment at Children’s Hospital New Orleans. Funds raised by the Cherry Blossom Run go to benefit Children’s Miracle Network-partner hospitals all across the country, like Children’s Hospital. This year, proceeds total $515,000.
Palazzo, who serves as an honorary race chair and is one of two members of Congress planning to run the ten mile race, will don the signature orange tee and wristband in Myers’ honor on Sunday. More than 15,000 runners are expected to gather on the National Mall for the annual event.
“When I heard the story of our own South Mississippi son, and realized he was being treated at Children’s, the race took on a whole new meaning,” Palazzo stated. “I knew I had to run as a part of Team Nick Myers.”
“I’m joining our local community to send the message to Nick and other teens on the coast battling this disease, to say: ‘We’re in this with you’,” Palazzo continued. “When you look at these brave kids and the incredible community response, it makes you proud to be a South Mississippian.”
