In GOP primary battle, Mississippi matters

By: Magnolia Tribune - February 27, 2012

Gingrich coming to Coast; Romney, Santorum visits likely

Mississippi’s late-in-the-game presidential primary normally gets little attention. But this year, with at least three GOP candidates still in the hunt, the contest is expected to draw attention, advertising and visits.

Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney have established substantial Magnolia State operations. Gingrich is planning to visit the state March 8 and March 12. Romney representatives say they expect he’ll do likewise soon. Santorum late last week was working to open Mississippi offices and a visit from him is likely as well before the March 13 state primary.

PACs supporting Romney and Gingrich have begun advertising in Mississippi and Alabama, which also has a March 13 primary. Observers say Ron Paul, who visited the state last year, could also gain traction.
