Lawmakers this year may scrutinize whether state agencies have met specific benchmarks, as the Legislature moves toward performance-based budgeting.
But the budget initiative championed by Gov. Phil Bryant is not expected to be approved this session.
Such a budgeting system requires state agencies to develop strategic plans outlining their goals and then ties state dollars to their ability to meet them. Lawmakers, for example, might appropriate a specific dollar amount to the state Department of Education expecting to see an improvement in graduation rates.
