BRYANT WELCOMES THE SENATE’S PASSAGE OF CHARTER SCHOOL BILL
Gov. Phil Bryant commends the Senate for passing legislation to allow for public charter schools. Bryant has long been a proponent of public charter schools, observing such schools in West Helena, Ark. and New Orleans, La. during the past four years. In his inaugural State of the State address, Bryant asked the Legislature to put a workable charter school bill on his desk.
“Creating public charter schools is one way we can improve the quality of education for Mississippi children,” Bryant said. “I commend the Senate for their bold steps to give our children the education opportunities they deserve. I look forward to seeing this legislation come to fruition, and I hope our state’s leaders will consider additional tools, such as dual enrollment programs, to improve education in our state.”
Mississippi Republican Party Statement on Passage of Charter Schools Act in the Senate
Mississippi Republican Party Chairman Joe Nosef offered this statement following passage of SB 2401, the Mississippi Public Charter Schools Act of 2012, in the Senate:
“I congratulate Lt. Gov. Tate Reeves on the successful passage of the Mississippi Public Charter Schools Act in the Senate, and thank him for his leadership on the issue. Chairman Gray Tollison and Vice-Chairman Nancy Collins should also be commended for their hard work in authoring this legislation and guiding it through the Education committee. Charter schools are long overdue in Mississippi as true reform was killed year after year under the previous leadership in the House, but parents throughout the state will soon have an additional option in the public school education of their children.”
