Barbour Says Policy Is At Forefront Of Governor’s Race

JACKSON, Miss. — Mississippi’s outgoing Republican governor said he’s pleased that the candidates vying for his seat aren’t making the campaigns personal.

“You don’t have people going out beating on each other. Both (Republican Lt. Gov.) Phil Bryant and (Hattiesburg Mayor) Johnny DuPree (a Democrat) say, ‘This is why I ought to be governor,'” Gov. Haley Barbour said. “Local races, presidential races, governor’s races ought to be about policy. What are you going to do to make Mississippi a better place?”

U.S. Rep. Bennie Thompson, a Democrat, said even without a large campaign fund, DuPree will make a serious showing on Nov. 8.

“The notion is if you can get your message out without advertising then you’ll win also. That means you’ll have to go more places see more people. Get more people involved,” Thompson said.
