Clarion Ledger – Election about issues, not sound bites

Now that Democrats have settled on Hattiesburg Mayor Johnny DuPree as their standard-bearer in Tuesday’s runoff primary, the gubernatorial race to the Nov. 8 general election can truly begin.

The campaigns so far have been lacking in substantive issues. That should change, with DuPree and Republican nominee Lt. Gov. Phil Bryant squaring off.

Both candidates have stands on education, the premier issue for Mississippi. DuPree’s campaign has focused on calls to increase teacher pay and pushed early childhood efforts, among other plans. Bryant’s positions are less innovative, focusing on charter schools, cutting administrative costs and accountability. That could change. Issues should now take center stage.

The key is issues, not sound bites. Let the campaigns begin!
