Will Longwitz, who is running in a suburban Jackson seat, sent out a mailer before the August 2nd primary that included a hand-written note on the front from a “Thad.”
There was no last name, but the sort of Republican activist who would show up for an August primary would be informed enough to assume that the sender was the state’s popular senior senator, Thad Cochran.
What makes the trickery more interesting is that Longwitz’s opponent in the GOP run-off is Charles Barbour, the nephew of Gov. Haley Barbour. The governor is associated with the Cochran wing of the state GOP and it would be remarkable if the senator weighed in on a primary against a Barbour.
But he didn’t.
