Hewes seeks name recognition in lt. gov. race
Editor’s note: The Clarion-Ledger editorial board has invited candidates for lieutenant governor and governor to discuss their campaigns. Stories will run as candidates appear at the meetings.
State Sen. Billy Hewes admits he faces a unique challenge in running for lieutenant governor.
Though he’s been in the Legislature for 20 years, the Gulf Coast resident has lacked the statewide name recognition of his opponent, Tate Reeves, who has been elected treasurer twice and hales from the more centrally located Rankin County.
Speaking to The Clarion-Ledger editorial board on Tuesday, Hewes summed up his efforts a little more than a month from the Aug. 2 Republican primary: “It’s all about getting known.”
