Chaney Meets with Congressional Delegation on Insurance Issues Affecting State

Jackson, MS – Mississippi Commissioner of Insurance Mike Chaney and fellow members of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) were in Washington, D.C. Wednesday to confer with members of Congress about ongoing financial and health reform efforts.

More than 35 state insurance regulators gathered for the NAIC Washington Forum where they were briefed by Nancy-Ann DeParle, White House Deputy Chief of Staff and Steve Larsen, Deputy Director for Oversight, Office of Consumer Information and Insurance Oversight at Health and Human Services. Chair of the House Financial Services Committee Congressman Spencer Bachus (R-AL) and Senator Ben Nelson (D-NE) also addressed the regulators.

Chaney and five other Commissioners (LA, SC, NC, FL, GA) met with Mississippi Senator Roger Wicker on his new legislation addressing wind verses water issues, which he introduced in Congress on Thursday. In addition, regulators urged their congressional delegates to consider long-term reauthorization of the National Flood Insurance Program.

“Meeting members of Congress in Washington, D.C. helps to reinforce the connection between actions at the federal level and the impact it has back home,” Chaney said.

“State regulators are the best resource to help Congress understand how we can work together to protect consumers and promote competitive insurance markets in Mississippi.”
