U.S. Rep. Alan Nunnelee held his first town hall meeting since being elected to Congress and pledged public accessibility would be the hallmark of his tenure in office.
Extra security was present during both Nunnelee’s visit with the county’s elected officials earlier Tuesday and during a wide-ranging forum at the DeSoto County Courthouse.
The extra security is seen as necessary in light of the recent shooting of Arizona Congresswoman, Rep. Gabrielle Giffords.
“When I ran for this office I committed I would be available and accessible to the public,” Nunnelee said. “Town hall meetings are part of that. I think it’s important we publicly allow any citizen who wants to show up and make a comment to do so. I’m here not so much to talk but to listen.”
