Who’ll replace Graves on bench?
Now that state Supreme Court Justice James Graves Jr. has been confirmed to the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals, the question turns to who will replace him on Mississippi’s nine-member high court.
Gov. Haley Barbour must name a replacement to serve until the November 2012 general election. Graves’ term ends in January 2013.
“That process cannot begin until Justice Graves’ new position on the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals is approved by President Obama, and he officially resigns from the state Supreme Court,” Barbour spokeswoman Laura Hipp said Tuesday.
The U.S. Senate on Monday confirmed Graves’ lifetime appointment to the court that hears appeals from Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas. He said he doesn’t know exactly when his transition will begin.
