Former U.S. Sen. Trent Lott offered his support for two Republicans seeking the state’s two highest offices in this year’s general election.
Lott, who rarely openly has backed candidates for state office in past elections, said he already has held a fund-raising event for Lt. Gov. Phil Bryant’s gubernatorial campaign.
“Mississippi is making progress, continuing to focus on jobs, education and transportation,” Lott said, adding he believed Bryant’s similar goals would make him the ideal choice as Mississippi’s next governor.
Additionally, Lott, who was speaking Tuesday at a leadership forum hosted by Jackson Preparatory School, has announced his support for longtime friend state Sen. Billy Hewes in the lieutenant governor’s race.
