Texting ban OK’d by Senate

The Mississippi Senate overwhelmingly voted Thursday to join 30 states and the District of Columbia in banning texting while driving.

During debate, Sen. Kenny Wayne Jones made his way to the podium wielding Wednesday’s edition of The Clarion-Ledger.

He pointed to the headline “No charges in car death” appearing over an article about a teenage driver who police said caused an accident that killed 45-year-old William Lofton, a vice president at Trustmark National Bank, last year.

Lofton, Jones said, was a close friend and the accident is a reminder that more needs to be done to curtail distracted driving. Witnesses told police it appeared the girl had been looking down, perhaps texting.
