Nativity Scene At State Capitol Sparks Controversy
JACKSON, Miss. — A nativity scene at the State Capitol is sparking controversy.
The nativity scene is privately funded. Lt. Gov. Phil Bryant asked the Mississippi-based 911 Remembrance Foundation to sponsor the display. It features a barn that’s about 4 feet tall, with figures of Mary, Joseph and baby Jesus.
The Freedom From Religion Foundation has been given the approval to erect a sign near the display that says, “Religion is but myth and superstition.” The sign will go up on Monday.
“Religion is but a myth that hardens hearts and enslaves minds,” said Annie Laurie Gaylor, the co-president of Freedom From Religion. “Once they said it’s a public forum and there’s going to be religion, then we’re going to make sure the views of non-religious people are expressed in the state of Mississippi.”
