“To say we’re never going to recruit a drop-back quarterback again, that’d be incorrect,” Meyer said. “If we do, we just have to make sure we put the pieces around him to have that guy have a chance.”
Florida has the drop-back quarterback now in John Brantley, but they don’t have the pieces Meyer referred to around Brantley. That’s why he’s rotating Trey Burton and Jordan Reed with Brantley.

“To have a drop-back quarterback you really need a pound-it tailback that you can turn around and hand the ball off,” Meyer said. “You also need to have a very stout, experienced tight end, which doesn’t exist here. So we’ve tried to address some issues. Aaron Hernandez left early. That would have been perfect for Johnny Brantley to have, an experienced tight end who can block but also catch. There are some missing ingredients.
