Eyes around the country are on the November congressional elections.
But in Mississippi, a candidate for lieutenant governor is taking advantage of the energy in the air.
State Sen. Billy Hewes of Gulfport, president pro tempore of the Mississippi Senate, held a campaign event at Peavey Electronics in Meridian Tuesday night.
The election isn’t until 2011, but Hewes says it’s never too early to begin canvassing the state.
“There is a lot of politics in the air with the congressional races going on right now,” said Hewes. “But we think it’s important to get people around the state, and Meridian has opened its arms to us. And we’ve been very involved with the arts and entertainment community, like the Country Music Trail and support for the Riley Center.”
