How it all began for Cam Newton
“I was determined to be the type of parent that didn’t shove my kids into something or force them to play,” he says. “I never coached them so it wouldn’t be said I guided sons always through. I was there to be supportive. That’s all.”
But back home, Cecil Newton would play catch with his sons. And, goodness gracious, could young Cameron sling the football.
“We would throw for an hour in the yard,” he says. “He wouldn’t have any arm problems. My other son and other kids, after 10 or 15 minutes their elbows or shoulders or something were hurting. He was throwing with such velocity. It would sting your hands, and he never seemed to get tired.”
