2nd Dickie Scruggs book to be released today

By: Magnolia Tribune - October 19, 2010

Curtis Wilkie’s book out tomorrow, reading at Square Books

“That’s life and we can look back on so many junctures where life could go any way,” Wilkie said. “I think (Scruggs) is basically a good man who made some very poor decisions and is paying for it. I still consider him a friend and I hope he will continue to consider me a friend.”

That last statement– that Scruggs is basically a good man whose life took a turn that could have gone another way– represents a way of thinking that is not extended in the book to a number of people. It’s a far more charitable point of view than is extended to, for instance, Judge Lackey, Grady Tollison, or Johnny Jones, or to others who were in disputes with Scruggs over the years.

The notion that there was some sort of turning point where Scruggs went one way and could have gone another is also completely at odds with what happened. What Scruggs set out to do in the Wilson case completely belies that notion, and the casualness with which Scruggs agrees to kick in another $10,000 in the November 1st meeting with Balducci just underscores that.

All that said, I’m not sure the DeSoto Times guy actually read the book– his article refers over and over to the trials in the case, when there were none.
