Bryant takes aim at city’s proposed immigration policy
Lt. Gov. Phil Bryant is taking aim at a proposed Jackson ordinance discouraging police and other employees from questioning the immigration status of people seeking services.
In a letter written Wednesday to the City Council, Bryant warns the City Council that the proposal could violate state law requiring employers, including municipalities, to confirm the legal status of job candidates.
Ward 2 City Councilman Chokwe Lumumba brought the proposal before the council on Tuesday, and it was referred to the Planning Committee for further review.
Lumumba could not be reached Wednesday, but he has said he drafted the proposal in response to a controversial immigration law in Arizona that requires law enforcement officers to determine a suspected immigrant’s legal status and requires legal immigrants to carry documentation.
