GWC – Scruggs bribery scandal done, but questions linger
With federal prosecutors reportedly closing down their judicial bribery probe in Mississippi, two figures have emerged relatively unscathed — P.L. Blake and Ed Peters.
Why did Peters get off so easy? Scruggs and five other plaintiffs’ attorneys, DeLaughter and two other state judges, and a former state auditor all drew prison time from the three judicial bribery cases that the feds unearthed. Some of the misdeeds of the convicted were less egregious than Peters’.
Yet, Peters only had to give up his law license and what was left of the $1 million he had been paid by the Scruggs team.
Why did he get such a sweet deal from the feds?
That question still awaits an answer.
