Congressman Childers Announces $1 Million in DOE Funds for the University of Mississippi
Washington, DC – The Department of Energy (DOE) has awarded $1 million in funding for the National Center for Physical Acoustics at the University of Mississippi, Congressman Travis Childers (MS-01) announced today.
“These funds represent a significant investment in energy conservation cost research in Mississippi and nationwide,” said Congressman Childers. “With this grant, the University of Mississippi will be better able to devote its innovative resources to the research and development of energy alternatives to reduce our country’s dependency on foreign oil and strengthen national security.”
This project will develop infrasound technologies for passive acoustic detection of wind turbine in-flow conditions for active control and optimization. Applications of infrasound operations to be addressed are: (a) development of rapid response Sonic Detection and Ranging (SODAR) system to obtain real time wind velocity profiles, (b) array of ground based infrasound arrays to predict wind velocity profiles, (c) prediction of sound from large scale wind turbine with optimization of rotor geometry for low noise and high performance, and (d) health monitoring system for rotor blades using wireless flush mounted sensors.
