Two Republican candidates will square off in a June 1 primary and the winner will try to unseat longtime incumbent Democrat U.S. Rep. Gene Taylor.
State Rep. Steven Palazzo, a Biloxi Republican, faces political newcomer Joe Tegerdine of Petal. The winner faces Taylor, who has no primary opponent, in the Nov. 2 general election. Libertarian candidate Kenneth “Tim” Hampton and Reform Party candidate Anna Jewel Revies, both of Hattiesburg, also have qualified for the general election, but don’t have to run in the primaries.
The GOP primary comes one day after Memorial Day, and the candidates are worried about the race being overshadowed by holiday activities.
