Questions & Answers with 1st District candidates

The three candidates in the upcoming 1st Congressional District Republican primary have much in common when it comes to issues, but their views diverge in several areas.

On the June 1 ballot will be consultant and former Fox News analyst Angela McGlowan of Oxford, state Sen. Alan Nunnelee of Tupelo and former Eupora Mayor Henry Ross.

If no one wins a majority plus one, a runoff will be held June 22.

The winner will proceed to the Nov. 2 general election, which already includes the unopposed Democratic incumbent, Travis Childers, and seven other independent and minor-party candidates.

In response to a questionnaire from the Daily Journal, the three Republicans offer similar views on several issues. They oppose the recently passed health care overhaul and think tort reform is a key ingredient in improving the system. They also agree that wasteful earmark spending should end, and that the public’s tax burden needs to be reduced.

But their answers also point out differences in approach and emphases.
