Editorial: The PSC should remove obstacles to Kemper project
STATE REGULATORS should respond positively to adjustments made by Mississippi Power Co. in its request for approval of a new-generation coal-fired power plant in Kemper County.
The $2.4 billion project was left hanging in the balance after an April 29 hearing in which the Public Service Commission approved Mississippi Power’s application but placed burdensome conditions on the company’s ability to finance and build the plant. Company officials argued that those conditions — which included a $2.4 billion cap on construction costs the company could charge to ratepayers — made it impossible for them to pursue a fiscally sound plan for financing the plant.
Regulators will meet today to reconsider the conditions in their earlier order.
