JACKSON, Miss. — The House and Senate approved legislation today that stood in the way of resolving a budget for the state’s 2011 fiscal year that begins July 1.
To onlookers, the action appeared no different than the flurry of legislation that flies from the House to the Senate, and vice versa, in the closing days of a legislative session.
But by approving HB 1059, legislators agreed to exactly how much money the state expects to collect — and consequently spend — during the 2011 fiscal year.
The final amount was $5.49 billion for 2011.
