Miss. senators split on gov’s tax appeal nominee, citing ex-business partner’s conviction
JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Some Mississippi senators say they’re concerned about the business background of Gov. Haley Barbour’s nominee to lead a new State Tax Appeals Board.
Barbour nominated Jackson accountant Janet Mann for a six-year term, beginning July 1.
Democrats Gray Tollison and Hob Bryan say they’re not sure she’s right for the job.
One of Mann’s ex-business partners, former Georgia state Rep. Robin Williams, was convicted in 2005 on federal charges of conspiring to steal money from a Georgia mental health center.
Mann says she let investigators see the books for a company she ran with Williams and testified against him at trial.
The Mississippi Senate Finance Committee voted 8-6 Wednesday to endorse Mann. Her nomination moves to the full Senate. Barbour’s spokesman says the governor stands by the nominee.
