Overtime change in NFL would bring cheers, jeers

The change calls for both teams to get the ball at least once — unless there is a touchdown scored (offensive or defensive) on the opening possession. If not, the team that lost the coin toss would then gain a chance to see if it could win or tie the game. Should the game remain tied thereafter, sudden death returns and the first team to score wins.

“I do see this format as a viable alternative to the overtime plan that’s been in place,” Whisenhunt said. “There will certainly be a lot of discussion.”
