SpaceXAI powers down 11 of 69 temporary turbines at Southaven facility

Earlier this year, SpaceX acquired xAI, which operates the Colossus datacenters at the Tennessee-Mississippi state line.

Complaints over noise from the turbines at the Southaven data center have resulted in a class action lawsuit filed by Jason Haley, Preston Herrington, and Taylor Logsdon in the U.S. District Court for the North District of Mississippi. The plaintiffs claim the noise is disruptive to their daily lives

Now, the company, rebranded as SpaceXAI, announced Monday that they have successfully powered down 11 of the 69 turbines at the Southaven facility.

“SpaceXAI remains committed to being a responsible neighbor and we’ll continue to rapidly remove the temporary, mobile turbines over the next year as our new 1.2 GW power plant comes online under the Clean Air Act permit,” the company stated.

The 1.2 GW permanent power plant currently under construction will consist of 41 permanent turbines authorized under a Clean Air Act permit, granted to SpaceXAI in March 2026. 

SpaceXAI entered into an agreed order with the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality in July establishing a fixed removal timeline for all 69 of the temporary, mobile turbines that currently power the Southaven facility.

All temporary turbines will be removed by July 2027, according to the company.

In addition, SpaceXAI has also previously announced that they are investing to ensure that all mobile turbines are equipped with advanced emission control technologies.

“These technologies include selective catalytic reduction devices that safely convert nitrous oxides into nitrogen and water and reduce environmental impacts. Current monitoring shows that local air quality continues to meet or exceed EPA standards,” the company stated.

Further, SpaceXAI said Monday that they have invested “millions of dollars” in sound walls, silencers, and next-gen turbines with advanced quieting technologies.

“We care deeply about being good neighbors and regularly reconfigure operations to reduce noise and minimize our impact on the Southaven community,” the company shared on social media.

The Colossus site is designed to support the training of large-scale AI models like Grok. SpaceXAI plans to equip the facility with 1 million GPUs (special computer chips) to enhance the speed and intelligence of its AI systems.
