Remoreseful Mark McGwire still denies steroids improved ability in impromptu press conference
JUPITER, Fla. – Mark McGwire was ready to talk when he made his official return to baseball as batting coach for the St.Louis Cardinals yesterday.
After a lengthy coaches meeting with manager Tony LaRussa, McGwire surprised reporters by engaging in an impromptu 17-minute Q&A session in which he reiterated how sorry he was for having used steroids while breaking Roger Maris’ home record in 1998.
Wearing his old uniform No.25, which had not been re-issued by the Cardinals since his retirement in 2001, McGwire uttered more mea culpas for having used steroids, but insisted again he did so only to help speed up his recovery from injuries and not for any performance enhancem
