METAIRIE — In the history of football in the state of Louisiana, no player has ever won a national championship for a state college and the Super Bowl for this state’s NFL team.
It could happen twofold a week from Sunday when the New Orleans Saints play the Indianapolis Colts in the Super Bowl in Miami.
Saints defensive back Randall Gay of Brusly and wide receiver Devery Henderson of Opelousas each played on LSU’s 2003 national championship team and have a shot at the NFL world championship. Both were seniors that season when the Tigers beat Oklahoma 21-14 in the Louisiana Superdome for the title. Both played Sunday when the Saints beat Minnesota 31-28 in overtime for the NFC championship in the dome.
