NCAA hears radical proposal on how to curb athletic spending

Restrict coaches’ salaries … reduce football scholarships … institute a playoff.
Those were the three ideas presented by Smith College economist Andrew Zimbalist in Atlanta at this week’s NCAA Convention, according to Inside Higher Education.
Zimbalist was the keynote speaker in a colloquium on how to curb spending on college athletics.

Previously, the Division I Athletic Director’s Association proposed sving money by: shortening the playing seasons of non-revenue sports; reducing the size of team travel squads; restricting off-season practice; stop printing media guides; and ending the practice of home football teams staying in local hotels the night before a game.
