2006 in review | Celebrities, politicians, volunteers made our news
The year 2006 offered a variety of news about post-Katrina recovery efforts, including related school closings and the battles among politicians and transportation officials regarding the rebuilding of bridges the storm wiped out in Bay St. Louis and Ocean Springs.
Celebrity sightings were frequent, with former presidents coming to town to assist or lead recovery programs as well as popular musicians and national news leaders. Then–President George W. Bush made frequent trips to the area to take inventory of the devastation and the ongoing efforts to resurrect washed-out neighborhoods and area attractions.
