Greenwood Commonwealth comes out against Cochran’s pork

This is not a new trend. It certainly did not start with the severe economic downturn of the past two years, when the conventional economic wisdom dictated a huge infusion of public money to keep the recession from tipping over into a depression.

Excessive spending from Washington has been going on for more than three decades, and under the guidance of both political parties, in good times and in bad. If lawmakers, including seasoned leaders like Cochran, don’t see the folly of what they’re doing in heedlessly piling on debt, then our government truly has lost its way.

Republican critics griped about $3.9 billion for more than 5,000 local projects from lawmakers of both parties. Cochran, who has been one of the kings of earmarks in recent years, certainly got his share into this bill.

Most likely, though, he will be praised for it back home, since the only earmarks that voters usually object to are the ones that go to a state other than their own.
