ACLU denies its targeting DeSoto with lawsuits

The American Civil Liberties Union has filed several lawsuits recently involving DeSoto County Schools and the city of Southaven, but ACLU officials say there is no special focus on the county.

Southaven and its police department are named in four pending federal lawsuits, and the county’s school district is the target of two suits.

The ACLU attention has been enough to draw the ire of DeSoto County Schools Supt. Milton Kuykendall, who said during a TEA party gathering in Southaven Sept. 5 that “the ACLU has camped out in DeSoto County.”

“If we have to fight the ACLU, we’ll fight them,” Kuykendall told the crowd gathered to speak out against high taxes and other issues.
