OXFORD — Houston Nutt knows the numbers, so he’s aware that Ole Miss ranked dead last in the Southeastern Conference in pass defense last season, giving up nearly 222 yards per game through the air.
But the numbers don’t tell the whole story, according to the second-year coach. He points to last year’s win over Texas Tech in the Cotton Bowl as proof that by the end of last season, the Rebels had a drastically improved pass defense.
“If you said we were going to play Texas Tech last September, we might have tried to forfeit the game,” Nutt said jokingly. “But we got better. And hopefully, we’ll be even better this year.”
