CL – Feud over Barbour’s veto heads to court
Attorney General Jim Hood and two other high-ranking Democrats are asking a Hinds County chancery judge to rule that Republican Gov. Haley Barbour’s partial veto of Senate Bill 2041 is null and void.
Barbour struck down parts of the legislation that would have given salary supplements to hundreds of state troopers and mandated the state continue paying comp time for dozens of others.
“It is essential that the Commissioner of Public Safety, not the Legislature, has the authority and flexibility to effectively manage the Highway Patrol and other agencies within DPS,” Barbour said then.
Hood’s office issued an opinion that the partial veto is unconstitutional.
“The law is crystal clear that the governor cannot veto a condition of an appropriation bill,” Hood said in a statement today.
